Confused and worried by an ATO ‘good news’ letter

Friday, August 22, 2014

An ICA member received this letter from the ATO. It’s supposed to be a ‘good news’ letter requiring less BAS reporting (ie; less red tape) by our member. Our member is a professional, experienced editor. He knows a LOT about writing. But he was confused and a little worried that he might have done, or might do, something wrong! He went to his accountant to check (which cost him money of course!)  More...

'ATO is plagued by systemic inefficiency…'

Wednesday, May 28, 2014

We had a great response to our call for stories about your experiences with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Our thanks to all those people who got in touch. International tax attacks on the self-employed

Tuesday, March 18, 2014

In recent times we've heard of a number of cases where local tax authorities have made it difficult to engage independent contractors. This sort of story is not confined to Australia. LOVE filling out forms!

Sunday, October 13, 2013

Former Treasurer of Australia Peter Costello has complained about filling out small business red tape forms. Yes, here’s the man who created the GST and BAS reporting system and now he’s a small businessperson. He certainly sees the irony now that he’s undertaking much of the government reporting he created.

At the same time, the Productivity Commission has described the small business red tape burden problem. It’s a call to law-makers and administrators to lift their game! More...

Building paper castles

Sunday, October 13, 2013

The Tax Office seems to think that the construction sector is all about paper work. They’ve created heaps of useless reporting requirements directing at harming independent contractors. We’ve criticized this strongly in the past. An ICA member describes the red tape nonsense with a copy of the new forms to be filled out. More...
