You may remember the ATO was calling to have scrutiny of its behaviour curtailed and a Parliamentary Inquiry was conducting hearings. We put in a submission saying “no way! The ATO can’t be a law unto itself. It needs to be scrutinized, particularly for small business people.”
Fortunately, good sense has prevailed. Just before the election was called the Parliamentary Committee released its report. The Committee recommended continuing ATO scrutiny. That’s absolutely essential if small business people are to receive some chance of fair treatment from the ATO.
“The committee notes that, at the hearings, the ATO offered to independently review any cases provided by Independent Contractors Australia.”Well, no need to worry on that score! We’ve been working solidly on some specific cases and will do significant follow-up when everything is prepared.
And on this we’d highly recommend attending this National Small Business Conference in Melbourne from 10 to 12 August. The ATO is doing a presentation, as is the Inspector-General of Taxation (IGT). The IGT scrutinizes the ATO. Here’s a link to the conference program. Bookings can be made here.
