Entrepreneurial Index launched in Canada: Some interesting results!

Wednesday, June 04, 2014

Ken Phillips is in Canada at the moment launching the Entrepreneurial Index (EI) in partnership with the Frontier Centre. ICA has been working on this for four years and finally it’s all go!

The Entrepreneurial Index assesses the impact of government laws, regulations and their administration on the ability of people to be self-employed and hence entrepreneurial. It gives a score out of 100.

This first stage of the EI compares the provinces in Canada with states in Australia and New Zealand. The higher the score, the more self-employed entrepreneurship-friendly is the jurisdiction.
  • New Zealand is on top with 78%
  • Manitoba at second on 76% has caused a surprise in Canada
  • The ACT in Australia is bottom at 59% (no surprise there!)
All the details and rankings are at a new dedicated website and there’s this handy one-page summary.

Last week Ken gave talks in Winnipeg, Calgary and at this International Taxpayers Conference in Vancouver. This week he's continuing the promotion of the Index, conducting a workshop in Toronto, then meetings in Ottawa, finishing with discussions and a dinner talk in Boston.

There will be more on the Index in the future. With our partners, we're working on plans to roll out across USA and have received strong interest from potential partners to do UK and Europe.

The end goal is for governments to wake up to how they damage (or assist) self-employed entrepreneurship and how things can improve. We want real positive change for the better. The Entrepreneurial Index gives a focus to our efforts.
