A Changing World

Saturday, January 02, 2016

There’s probably no more startling evidence of change than the development of the ‘bionic human’. Watch this extraordinary TED presentation about the new bionics creating enhanced human capacity. Alleged disability becomes ability! It’ll have your mind leaping!

Just as will the ticklingly funny discussion (also on TED) between Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin exploring how women’s relationships differ from men’s. As we’re (ICA) interested in small business, it makes us wonder about how women manage small business differently from men. It’s a cultural difference!

And if you’re interested in political cultural change, the interviews of ex-Labor Prime Minister Paul Keating by ABC journalist Kerry O’Brien make for a fascinating holiday read. Simply titled ‘Keating’ (Allen & Unwin, 2015), O’Brien asks Keating about the culture of the current Labor movement. Keating responds as follows:

“The party (Labor) is not open to the new professional and business classes, which carry a share of people with good Labor values… That person [self-employed] should be a Labor person but we’ve let them go. We’ve lost them. As the nature of the workforce has changed we haven’t changed with it.… any party that confines itself to one area of talent must suffer on its shortsightedness…”
As the speed of technological change continues to quicken, this almost certainly forces deeper understanding of human diversity, thereby creating demand for cultural and political responses.
